Most of a booth specification can be adjusted. The covering can be changed, the finish can be changed, the length can be cut to fit a wall. Height is the one that is effectively permanent, because a booth back is structural and the room is designed around it.
It is also the dimension that does the most to the room, and the one people think about last.
What each height actually does
36 inches is the most common height in our catalog, and it is the default for a reason. At 36 inches the back is above a seated guest’s shoulder but below standing eye level, so a server can see across the room and the room still reads as open. Fifteen of our twenty-five booth models are offered at this height, including the Chalmette, Grovewood, Metro, Neon, Reno, Sheffield, Southern and the Sims Special.
38 inches is a small step up that buys a little more shoulder support without closing the room in. The Sidney sits here.
42 inches is where a booth starts to feel like its own space. A seated guest’s head is below the top of the back, so conversation stops carrying to the next table and the booth becomes a room within the room. The Atlantis, Leeland, Monterey, Niagara, Scarborough and Venture are 42-inch models.
45 and 48 inches are the tall backs. The Concord is 45; the Regal is 48, the tallest standard back we make. At this height the booth is a divider as much as a seat. It will define circulation through a dining room whether or not that was the intention, and it will block sightlines from the host stand to the far wall.
How to choose
Start with what the room needs to do. A quick-service dining room that has to be scanned at a glance, cleared fast and turned over quickly wants 36 inches. A bar or a steakhouse selling a long sit wants 42 or taller. The height is a decision about dwell time more than about comfort.
Then check the sightlines. Stand where your host stand will be and where your pass will be, and ask what each of those people needs to see. A 48-inch back across the middle of a room will hide a table completely. Sometimes that is exactly the point. Sometimes it means a server walks the long way around forty times a shift.
Then check what is on the wall. Wainscot, a chair rail, outlets, a window sill and a fire alarm pull are all things a booth back can land awkwardly against. It is worth measuring the wall before choosing the back, not after.
Then think about noise. A taller back with an upholstered inside face absorbs more sound than a short one. In a hard-surfaced room, height is one of the few acoustic tools you have that does not require hanging something from the ceiling.
Mixing heights in one room
You can, and it often works better than a single height everywhere. A common approach is taller backs on the booths that face the room and need to feel private, with shorter backs along a window wall where blocking the view would be a waste.
What matters is that the transition looks intentional. Two heights that differ by six inches read as a design decision. Two that differ by two inches read as a mistake.
The other dimensions
Height gets the attention, but it travels with two others.
Length. The standard is 48 inches. Single and double versions are available across the catalog, along with extended-length wall bench sizes for a run along a wall.
Depth. This is where seated comfort actually lives, and it is the dimension most worth talking through rather than picking off a page. If you are working to a tight footprint, tell us the footprint and let us work back to it.
Every booth is built to order, so none of these are fixed. If a standard height is two inches wrong for your room, say so in the quote request. Changing it before the booth is built costs nothing. Changing it afterward means a new booth.
Before you commit
The 3D Studio renders our booths at their real heights. Turning one and looking at it from standing height tells you more about whether 42 inches is right for your room than any number does.
When you know what you need, send us the specification. Tell us the room, the heights you are considering and anything on the wall we should work around, and a written quote comes back within 24 hours. If you are not sure between two heights, ask for both. It costs you nothing and it is a much cheaper question to ask now than after the booths arrive.
